April 2011 Tennis Tidbits

*Drew Belton is the new men's tennis coach at North Surry High School.

*Leah Fitzgerald and Shannon Hessen were named the Doubles Most Valuable Players for the 2010 Lejeune varsity women's tennis team.

*The Broughton/Cardinal Gibbons match that was suspended due to rain will not be rescheduled because they are on different spring breaks the next two weeks.

*Watauga seniors Steve Lake, Patrick O'Neal, Cody Synder, and Ben Proffitt played their final regular season home match on Wednesday, April 13th, capping off their career with a league championship and a 7-2 win over South Caldwell.


*Nick James of Wilson Fike High School won his third consecutive singles championship at the Big East Conference Men's Tennis Tournament on Wednesday, April 13th!

*Northwest Guilford High School, coached by Randy Alexander, won the Piedmont Triad Conference regular season title with a 12-0 mark in league play.   The Vikings are 15-1 overall.

*Jay M. Robinson, coached by Sarah Dabbs, won the South Piedmont Conference championship on Wednesday.   The Bulldogs finished with a perfect 15-0 record.


*Armando Gonzalez of Tarboro High School won the Eastern Plains Conference Men's Tennis Tournament singles championship on Wednesday, April 13th.  Gonzalez is the first player in school history to win back-to-back conference singles titles.

*Zach Marks will be coaching the Northern Nash women's tennis team next fall.

*Trinity High School and Wheatmore High School will square off at High Point T.W. Andrews on Thursday, April 21st in a playoff match to determine the league's number one seed in the dual team playoffs after the two schools finished the season as co-champions in the PAC-6 Conference.

*John Dangerfield of Union Pines won his second consecutive singles championship at the annual Cape Fear Valley Conference Men's Tennis Tournament on Thursday, April 15th in Sanford.   Dangerfield did not drop a single game in his four matches.

*The Rosewood Eagles won the Carolina Conference men's tennis championship this spring.   The Eagles, coached by Bert Perkins, finished with an overall record of 12-1.

*Wilkes Central High School, coached by Perry Snipes, finished as co-champions of the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference with Elkin.   Wilkes Central posted marks of 13-1 in league play and 14-2 overall.

*Krissy O'Brien was named the Singles Most Valuable Player for the 2010 Lejeune varsity women's tennis team.

*Eastern Wayne's Chaz Fitzpatrick is currently ranked number 16 in the state in the boys' 16's division by the North Carolina Tennis Association.

*The Cary Tennis Park will be hosting the Atlantic Coast Conference men's and women's conference tournaments April 22-25.

*Southwest Edgecombe, coached by Joel Elliott, went 6-5 this season and tied for third place in the Eastern Plains Conference.    This was one of the best seasons in the sport in school history.

*Tarboro High School, coached by Billy Strother, won its final 11 matches of the season to finish as co-champions of the Eastern Plains Conference with a 14-3 overall record.    Greene Central High School, coached by Bobby Taylor, shared the EPC title, and won the coin flip on Wednesday, April 20th for the league's top playoff berth in the dual team playoffs.

*South Brunswick High School, coached by John Walls, won the Waccamaw Conference championship this spring with a perfect 10-0 league record.   South Brunswick was 16-4 overall, breaking the previous school record of 13 wins wins in a season.

*Aubrey Tharp and Karli Pelle were named the winners of Most Improved Player award for the Corinth Holders High School women's tennis team.

*Jordan Bailey of Topsail High School won the East Central Conference Tournament singles title.  Bailey is 17-1 this year in singles.

*Tyler Roberts and John Amato of Hopewell High School won the I-Meck Conference doubles championship at the league tournament on April 12th at Mooresville High School.   Roberts and Amato are 20-0 for the year in doubles.   Roberts was the conference singles champion last year.


*Wilson Fike went 13-4 this season under the direction of head coach Lee Matthews.  This is the best season for the Demons since the 2001 squad went 15-3 in men's tennis.


*Garner High School wrapped up the Greater Neuse River Conference regular season championship with an 8-1 victory over East Wake on Monday, April 25th on "Senior Day."    Seniors Clifford Smith, Kevin Fowler, Alex Bowling, Tyler Hunter, Shane Whittington, and Chris Sutton all won in singles for head coach Joseph Walls.   Garner finished its season with a record of 13-0 in league play and 16-2 overall.

*Reidsville, coached by Wayne Knight, and Jordan-Matthews, coached by Chris Eaves, finished as co-champions of the Mid-State Conference.   Jordan-Matthews won the coin flip for the league's number one playoff berth.


*Topsail High School, coached by Craig Mann, won the East Central Conference regular season championship despite losing five starters off of its 2010 squad.

*Christopher Davis was the men's tennis coach for the inaugural season at Corinth Holders High School.

*Cardinal Gibbons senior Chris Geaslen has won three consecutive Mideastern Regional doubles titles with three different partners.

*Charlotte Catholic junior Kyle Johnson won the Midwestern 3-A Regional Men's Tennis Tournament singles title for the third consecutive year on Saturday, May 7th.
