August 2010 Tennis Tidbits

*Pat Thornton is the new women's tennis coach at Northeastern High School in Elizabeth City.

*The players named to the Twin Cities Invitational All-Tournament Team were Shannon Herndon of Watauga, Sarah King and Hamilton Lovett of Raleigh Broughton, Katelyn Storey and Joy Loeblein of Salisbury, and Chloe Willetts of Winston-Salem R.J. Reynolds.


*The deadline for nominations for the North Carolina Tennis Association High School Coach of the Year award is Monday, August 31st.   For more information and an application, look in the "Links" section in the top left hand corner of this page!


*Lejeune High School, coached by Melissa Olson, will open its 2010 women's tennis season on Wednesday, September 1st at Northside High School.


*Defending 2-A state champion Salisbury High School, won the Port City Invitational Tournament in Wilmington this weekend, defeating Middle Creek, Cardinal Gibbons, and East Chapel Hill to win the title.    The Lady Hornets are coached by Chris Myers.

 *Wilmington New Hanover will be hosting the Port City Invitational High School Tournament August 20-21.   The other teams entered include Wilmington Hoggard, Salisbury, Cardinal Gibbons, East Chapel Hill, Middle Creek, Winston-Salem R.J. Reynolds, and South Brunswick.

*The Downeast Community Tennis Association will be holding a free clinic for high school players on Saturday, August 21st from 9:00-5:00 p.m. at River Birch Tennis Center in Greenville.   There will be an exhibition at lunch, featuring challenger level players.

*Luke Vail has accepted the position of men's tennis coach at Charles B. Aycock High School for this coming spring.


*Weddington and Charlotte Latin battled until almost the very end on Wednesday, August 18th.   Coach Mike Murphy's Weddington squad was locked in a 4-4 team battle when the rains came, and number one doubles was tied at 8-8.   No date has been set yet to complete the match.

*West Bladen High School, coached by Jeff Atkinson, will open its 2010 women's tennis season on Tuesday, August 17th at Fairmont at 4:00 p.m.

*Defending 4-A state champion Raleigh Broughton, coached by David Rose, was a unanimous choice of the voters as the #1 team in the state in the NCHSTCA 4-A preseason state rankings.    Charlotte Myers Park, coached by Ed Flynn, is ranked #2.

 *Magdalena McCurry is the new women's tennis coach at Hopewell High School.
 
  *Glenn Griffin will be the new women's tennis coach at Wilson Beddingfield High School.

*Team Connection will be holding a Warehouse Sale August 12-14.   They will have lots of tennis items such as shirts, shorts, skirts, dresses, polos, and shoes.   All apparel and footwear from the major athletic brands will be offered at up to a 75% discount.  There will also be music, entertainment, and food vendors at this fun event.   Team Connection is located at 615 Alton Place in High Point, just off Business 85.   The hours will be 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on August 12, and 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on August 13 and 14.

 

 

*Defending 2-A state champion Salisbury, coached by Chris Myers, was a unanimous choice of the voters as the #1 team in the state in the NCHSTCA 2-A preseason state rankings.    Tarboro, coached by Billy Strother, is ranked #2.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


*Defending 1-A state champion North Carolina School of Science and Math, coached by Richard McClenny, is ranked #1 in the state in the NCHSTCA 1-A preseason state rankings.    Mount Airy, coached by Scott Kniskern, is ranked #2.

*Cardinal Gibbons, coached by Andrew Tuttle, and Charlotte Catholic, coached by Jo Cabana, are tied for first place in the 3-A women's tennis preseason poll.

*Karen Hutson will be the women's tennis coach at Winston-Salem Parkland High School this fall.

*Bruce Lanier has resigned as the men's and women's tennis coach at Greensboro Page High School.

*Weddington High School, coached by Mike Murphy, will open its 2010 women's tennis season on Wednesday, August 18th at home against Charlotte Latin at 4:00 p.m.
