August 2011 Tennis Tidbits

 
*Wendy Medlin of Cuthbertson High School has agreed to serve as the Rocky River Conference 2-A representative for this fall.

*Alexander Central High School men's tennis players Shane Wimmer, Victor De La Cruz, and Will Vannoy won NCHSAA Sportsmanship Awards this spring.

*Alex Gaines of Wilmington New Hanover High School is currently ranked #15 in the state in the boys' 18's division by the North Carolina Tennis Association.

*Lezlie Carroll of Lake Norman High School has agreed to serve as the NCHSTCA conference representative for the I-Meck Conference this fall.

*Phedora Johnson is the new women's tennis coach at Washington High School.


*Wake Forest University will be hosting a High School Girls Tennis Day on Tuesday, August 3rd from 10:00-11:00 a.m. as part of the Winston-Salem Open.   Demon Deacon head coach Jeff Wyshner and members of the Wake Forest women's team will conduct an instructional doubles presentation.   For more information, coaches should contact Coach Wyshner at wyshner@wfu.edu.


*Sunni Hill is the new women's tennis coach at East Rowan High School.

*Gil Bowman will be starting his 25th season as the head women's tennis coach at Fayetteville Terry Sanford High School this fall.   Bowman has taught German for 40 years at the school.  He has coached the men's tennis team for 37 years and the women's basketball team for 31 years.

*Ian Butts won the Coach's Award for the 2011 Durham Riverside High School men's tennis team.

*Freshman Kyle Schlanger won the Most Outstanding Player award for the 2011 Northwest Guilford High School men's tennis team.

*All coaches are asked to check their email later this week for some exciting news from the NCHSTCA and My Tennis Network.

*The 63rd annual North Carolina Coaching Clinic will be held July 18-21 in Greensboro.    The event is sponsored by the North Carolina Coaches Association.   The tennis clinic will be on Wednesday, July 20th at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

 *Hunter Stephens won the Most Valuable Player award for the 2011 West Johnston High School men's tennis team.
 

*Erich Horner won the Most Valuable Player award for the 2011 Central Cabarrus High School men's tennis team.

*Sophomore Grant O'Brien won the Most Improved Player award for the 2011 Concord High School men's tennis team.

 *Loni Worsley, the 1996 4-A state finalist in singles, will be the new women's tennis coach at her alma mater, Winston-Salem R.J. Reynolds, this fall.
 

*Michael Ruocco won the Most Improved Player award for the 2011 Marvin Ridge High School men's tennis team.

*Matt Crews will be the new women's tennis coach at Winston-Salem Parkland High School.

 *Eastern Wayne High School men's tennis coach Craig Hassell will also be coaching the women's tennis team at the school this fall.

 *Jackson Boone won the Most Valuable Player award for the 2011 Kannapolis A.L. Brown men's tennis team.

 *David Henry of Wilmington New Hanover High School has agreed to serve as the NCHSTCA conference representative for the Mideastern Conference this fall.
 

*Daniel Caudill won the Most Improved Player award for the 2011 Alleghany High School men's tennis team.


*Carson Cherry won the Most Improved Player award for the 2011 Durham Riverside High School men's tennis team.

 

 *Carrboro High School's Patti Fox will be serving as the new NCHSTCA 2-A representative.
 

*Juan Cuevas won the Most Valuable Player award for the 2011 Southwest Edgecombe High School men's tennis team.

 *Bill Potter will be the new women's tennis coach at Forest Hills High School.   Potter coached at the University of Florida for many years and was named the NCAA Coach of the Year at the school in 1975.

*Amber Baglio is the new women's tennis coach at Piedmont High School.

*Sophomore Garrett Freese won the Best Serve award for the 2011 Franklinton High School men's tennis team.

*Brittany Jones of Union Pines won in singles and doubles in the Lady Vikings' 9-0 season opening win over Asheboro on Monday, August 15th.   Jones now has 56 career wins, which puts her 51st on the all-time list for Union Pines.

*Audrey Channell of Green Hope High School is currently ranked #11 in the state in the girls' 16's division by the North Carolina Tennis Association.

*Bruce Lanier will be the new men's tennis coach at Rockingham County High School this spring.  Lanier is the former coach at Greensboro Page High School.

*Junior Zach Mackenzie won the Viking Award for the 2011 Northwest Guilford men's tennis team.

*Rom Teague of Hickory High School has agreed to serve as the NCHSTCA conference representative for the Northwestern Conference this fall.

*Laura Davidson of Raleigh Broughton High School has agreed to serve as the NCHSTCA conference representative for the CAP 8 Conference this fall.

*Beverly Boltinhouse has 20 girls out for the tennis team at Spring Creek High School this week, and the school has decided to field a junior varsity and varsity team.

*Jon Huffman of Maiden High School has agreed to serve as the NCHSTCA conference representative for the Catawba Valley Athletic Conference this fall.

*Wilson Fike High School head coach Lee Matthews welcomed 24 players out for his first practice on Monday, August 1st.

*Jeff Wilson of A.C. Reynolds High School has agreed to serve as the Mountain Athletic Conference for the the NCHSTCA this fall.

*Rodney Pell will be the new men's tennis coach at Mt. Airy High School this spring.
