July 2011 Tennis Tidbits

*Addison Vail won the Coach's Award for the 2011 Charles B. Aycock High School men's tennis team.

*Eric Velasquez and Bruno Segovia won the Doubles Most Valuable Player awards for the 2011 Pender County High School men's tennis team.

*Bradley Wilson won the Most Competitive Player award for the 2011 Charles B. Aycock High School men's tennis team.

*Kyla Risko, a member of the women's tennis team at South Mecklenburg High School, was the Valedictorian for the class of 2011 at her school.   Risko has accepted a full academic scholarship to the University of South Carolina where she plans to major in law.   She also plans to try out for the USC tennis team as a walk-on.   Risko earned all-conference honors as a junior and senior.   She was a conference and regional runner-up in doubles as a senior.

*Rex Rose won the Most Consistent Player award for the 2011 Charles B. Aycock High School men's tennis team.

*Brent Morse won the Sportsmanship Award for the 2011 South Stokes High School men's tennis team.

*Lane Long won the Coach's Award for the 2011 Tarboro High School men's tennis team.

*Jacob Feldman, a member of the men's tennis team, was the Valedictorian for the class of 2011 at Winston-Salem R.J. Reynolds High School.   Feldman, who will be attending Harvard University in the fall, had the highest GPA of any senior in Forsyth County.

*Zach Eddins won the Most Improved Player award for the 2011 St. Stephens High School men's tennis team.

*John Dangerfield, the #1 player for Union Pines High School this past spring, is the son of Keith Dangerfield, who starred for North Moore High School in the mid 1970s.

*Mason Dunlap won the Coach's Hardest Worker Award for the 2011 Cedar Ridge High School men's tennis team.

*Susanne Kelly won the Most Valuable Player award for the 2010 Starmount High School women's tennis team.

*William Golberg won the Leadership Award for the 2011 Charlotte Providence men's tennis team.

*Winston-Salem R.J. Reynolds' Robbie Mudge won the school's Wendy's High School Heisman Award for the 2010-2011 school year.

*Cayley Oldham was named the Most Valuable Player for the 2010 Chatham Central High School women's tennis team.


*Matthew Daly of Cardinal Gibbons High School is currently ranked number nine in the state in the boys' 18's division by the North Carolina Tennis Association.


*Western Guilford men's tennis coach Jeff Whisnant will also be taking over the women's program at the school this fall.

*Tarboro men's and women's tennis head coach Billy Strother and his wife welcomed a new son, Bryson, into the world on June 18th.


*Jackson Willis won the Coach's Award for the 2011 Nash Central High School men's tennis team.


*Morgan Stewart and Krista King won the Most Outstanding Player awards for the 2010 Garner Magnet High School women's tennis team.

*Jonathan Marchuk won the "Character Counts" Award for the 2011 East Chapel Hill High School men's tennis team.

*Mike Roberts won the Most Improved Player award for the 2011 Ardrey Kell High School men's tennis team.

*Brooke Barfield, who starred for Wayne Christian School last year, will be playing at Charles B. Aycock High School this fall.

*Jerick Garrett won the Most Valuable Player award for the 2011 Gates County High School men's tennis team.

*Karthik Arunkumar won the Rookie of the Year award for the 2011 Ardrey Kell High School men's tennis team
.

*Allyson Owens was named the Most Valuable Player for the 2010 Gates County High School women's tennis team.

*Michael Telford and Sean Ireland won the Coach's Award for the 2011 Mooresville High School men's tennis team.


*Michael Brackett won the Most Valuable Player award for the 2011 Northern Nash High School men's tennis team.

*Rob Brown, a member of the men's tennis team, was named the Wilson Fike High School Male Athlete of the Year.

*Jared Hurt was named the Most Valuable Player for the 2011 Graham High School men's tennis team.

*Patrick Donovant won the Sportsmanship Award for the 2011 Reidsville High School men's tennis team.

*Miguelito Bautista won the Most Improved Player award for the 2011 Richlands High School men's tennis team.

*Jim Fan won the Coach's Award for the 2011 Ardrey Kell High School men's tennis team.

*Justin Kirkman won the Most Improved Player award for the 2011 Jordan-Matthews High School men's tennis team.


*Ed Caviness won singles state championships in 1952, 1953, and 1954 for Goldsboro High School.

*Swansboro High School athletic director Jim Sheehan has resigned from that post after 18 years at the school.   He also served as the head football coach for many years.   Sheehan is the men's and women's tennis coach at Swansboro.

*Ranae Parsain won the Coach's Award for the 2010 Gates County High School women's tennis team.

*Kia Brewington and Logan Keiper won the Coach's Award for the 2011 Jordan-Matthews High School men's tennis team.


*J. Matt Marshall, a member of the men's tennis team, was the Salutatorian for the class of 2011 at South Stokes High School.

*Ricardo Hernandez won the Most Improved Player award for the 2011 Starmount High School men's tennis team.

*Norah Tyler won the Most Improved Player award for the 2010 Gates County High School women's tennis team.

*John Latimer of Gray Stone Day School was named the 2011 Yadkin Valley Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Year.

*Courtney Bowers of Ashe County High School was named the 2010 Mountain Valley Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Year.

*Avery Musgrave won the Coach's Award for the 2011 Wheatmore High School men's tennis team.

*Aaron Pittman won the Most Valuable Player award for the 2011 Patton High School men's tennis team.

*Robbie Mudge won the Player of the Year award for the 2011 Winston-Salem R.J. Reynolds men's tennis team.

*Alicia Wall, a member of the women's tennis team, was the Valedictorian for the Class of 2011 at D.H. Conley High School.

*Freshman Quentin Thigpen won the Sportsmanship Award for the 2011 Greene Central High School men's tennis team.

*Brad Torres won the Most Improved Player award for the 2011 Southwest Edgecombe High School men's tennis team.

*Armando Gonzalez and Tyler Bennett won the Most Valuable Player awards for the 2011 Tarboro High School men's tennis team.

*John Leopard won the Most Valuable Player award for the 2011 East Mecklenburg High School men's tennis team.

*Maggie Kane of Raleigh Broughton High School is currently ranked number four in the state in the girls' 16's division by the North Carolina Tennis Association.

*Charles Jefferson and Brandon Felts won the Best Doubles Team award for the 2011 Granville Central High School men's tennis team.

*Levi Bruff won the Most Valuable Player award for the 2011 Central Davidson High School men's tennis team.

*Marcus Murrell won the Most Improved Player award for the 2011 Phillip O. Berry Academy of Technology men's tennis team.

*Bryson Williams won the Coach's Award for the 2011 Northern Nash High School men's tennis team.

*Robbie Mudge, the 4-A singles state champion from Winston-Salem R.J. Reynolds, will be playing college tennis at North Carolina State University.

*David Chang won the Team Before Self award for the 2011 Bunker Hill High School men's tennis team.

*Aaron Freeman won the Most Valuable Player award for the 2011 Hertford County High School men's tennis team.

*Carla McSwain will be the new women's tennis coach at South Stanly High School this fall.

*Matt Reitzel won the Most Valuable Player award for the 2011 St. Stephens High School men's tennis team.

*Matt Paschal won the Most Improved Player award for the 2011 Rockingham County men's tennis team.

*Blake Covingon of Reidsville High School was named to the Greensboro News and Record All-Area Men's Tennis Team.

*Tyler Roberts, a member of the men's tennis team, won the 2011 Wendy's High School Heisman Award for Hopewell High School.   Roberts also lettered in soccer and football as a senior.

*Daniel Goodman won the Coach's Award for the 2011 Crest High School men's tennis team.

*Wilson Fike High School women's tennis player Meredith Pruden was named the Tom Ham Wilson Daily Times Athlete of the Year.

*Victor Mancha won the Coach's Award for the 2011 Richands High School men's tennis team.

*Jordan McClure won the Most Improved Player award for the 2011 Wheatmore High School men's tennis team.

*The 2011 Hopewell High School men's tennis team posted a 4.825 weighted GPA for the spring semester.   Each of the 11 players on the team won an individual Scholar-Athlete award from the NCHSAA.   The team members also completed 35 AP classes during the semester. 

*Elizabeth Tolson of New Bern High School won the women's tennis singles state championship in 1976 and 1977.

 

*Ephraim Harrell won the Most Valuable Player award for the 2011 South Stokes High School men's tennis team.  Harrell compiled a perfect 10-0 record in singles against 2-A opponents in the Northwest Conference.

*Lynnette Worthington will be coaching the women's tennis team at Riverside-Martin High School this fall.

*Charles B. Aycock High School head coach Brad Matthews was in Cooperstown, New York last week to watch his sons play baseball.   His youngest son hit a homerun in his first at bat at the Hall of Fame Complex.

*Brandon Thomas won the Most Improved Player award for the 2011 Alexander Central High School men's tennis team.

*Greensboro Page High School is looking to fill some open dates the first week of the season (August 15-20).   If interested, contact head coach Jason Allen.

*The NCHSAA Hall of Fame will soon have its first high school tennis coach.   John Frye of Union Pines is one of the eight members of the Class of 2011 that will be inducted in October.

*Tyler Biehl won the Most Valuable Player award for the 2011 Richlands High School men's tennis team.

*Davis Blount won the Sportsmanship Award for the 2011 Durham Riverside High School men's tennis team.

*Lucas Edwards won the Coach's Award for the 2011 Alleghany High School men's tennis team.
