March 2011 Tennis Tidbits

* Senior Elizabeth Thompson was awarded the Most Valuable Player award at Tarboro High School's Fall and Winter Sports Banquet on Wednesday, March 9th.

*John Walls is the new men's tennis coach at South Brunswick High School.   He is the brother of Garner Magnet School coach Joe Walls.

*Sandy Luney is the new men's tennis coach at St. Stephens High School.

*Winston-Salem R.J. Reynolds High School, coached by Brad Fisher, will be competing in the National High School Team Tennis All American Invitational in Newport Beach, California March 18-19.    The Demons are the defending 4-A state champs in North Carolina.   Reynolds has been seeded third for this year's California event.

*Victoria Brogdon was named the 2010 Most Valuable Player for the Western Harnett women's tennis team.

*Peter McDonald, a member of the East Chapel Hill High School men's tennis team, is currently ranked #1 in the state in the boys' 18's division by the North Carolina Tennis Association.    McDonald was the runner-up in singles at the 4-A state individual tourmament in 2010.

* Senior Maggie King was awarded the Most Improved Player award at Tarboro High School's Fall and Winter Sports Banquet on Wednesday, March 9th. 

*Mike Edwards is the new men's tennis coach at Charlotte Olympic High School.

*Doug MacLeod is the new men's tennis coach at Mallard Creek High School.

*John Dangerfield won in singles and doubles in the Vikings' 9-0 win over Overhills on Monday, March 21st and became the 62nd Union Pines player to win 50 career matches.

*Sophomore Sarah Grady won the Coach's Award at Tarboro High School's Fall and Winter Sports Banquet on Wednesday, March 9th.

*South Granville, coached by Steve Rochkind, defeated Oxford J.F. Webb 5-4 on Thursday, March 17th.  This was South Granville's first win in the last four seasons.

*Wilson Fike defeated Rocky Mount 8-1 on Thursday, March 17th.   This was the first win for the Golden Demons over Rocky Mount since 2001.   Fike is coached by Lee Matthews.

*Rhonda Blanchard is the new men's and women's tennis coach at Middle Creek High School.
 


*Flavia Sprenger won the 2010 Coaches Award for the Corinth-Holders women's tennis team.

*The East Chapel Hill at Raleigh Broughton match scheduled for Monday, March 21st was cancelled due to a scheduling mixup, and neither team has room on the schedule the rest of the year to make it up.

*Baronton Terry is the new men's tennis coach at West Charlotte High School.   Terry is also the head men's basketball coach at the school which just won the 4-A state championship!

*Robbie Mudge and Dillon Segur of Winston-Salem R.J. Reynolds were named to the All-Tournament Team at the All-American National Invitational High School Men's Tennis Tournament in Newport Beach, California.

*Ashleigh Westbrook, a 2001 Edenton Holmes graduate who played college tennis at Mt. Olive, is now a paralegal in Goldsboro.  She played for Coach Allen Hornthal at John A. Holmes High School from 1997-2000.

*Two members of the Greene Central varsity tennis team won regional National History Day titles at East Carolina University on Wednesday, March 30th.   Layne Carraway (Individual Web Site) and Ian Whitson (Individual Documentary) will be representing the school and regional at the state competition on Saturday, April 30th at the North Carolina Museum of History in Raleigh.


*Wilmington New Hanover's Woravin Kumthonkittikul was named to the All-Tournament Team on Saturday, March 26th at the DecoTurf High School Team Championships Tournament in Louisville, Kentucky.

*Matt Daly of Cardinal Gibbons High School was named the Most Valuable Player at the DecoTurf High School Team Championships Tournament in Louisville, Kentucky on Saturday, March 26th.  Daly posted a perfect 4-0 record at number one singles in the tournament.

*Cait Cobb won the 2010 Best Sportsmanship Award for the Lejeune High School women's tennis team.

*Chapel Hill High School will be hosting the annual Carolina 3-A Conference Men's Tennis Tournament on Saturday, April 9th.  Play begins at 10:00 a.m.

*Adam Howard won his 41st career match at Union Pines in the Vikings' 8-1 victory over Asheboro on Thursday, March 24th.

*Senior Landon Cansler became the first Maiden tennis player to win 100 career matches in singles and doubles during the tenure of head coach Jon Huffman in the match against Morganton Freedom on Thursday, April 14th!

*Alyssia and Alyssa Medina were named the co-winners of the Most Improved Player award for the 2010 Western Harnett women's tennis team.

*Union Pines, coached by John Frye, won its sixth consecutive Cape Fear Valley Conference men's tennis championship on Tuesday, April 12th with a 9-0 win over Southern Lee.

*Lauren Vann was named the Most Valuable Player for the 2010 Corinth-Holders women's tennis team.

*Jay Stalls of Union Pines High School won the 93rd match of his career on Tuesday, April 12th by recording wins in slngles and doubles.

*Newton-Conover High School, coached by Brian Tate, won its fifth consecutive Catawba Valley Athletic Conference men's tennis championship with an 8-1 victory over South Iredell on Monday, April 11th!


*Roman Cacha of Raleigh Athens Drive won the 99th match of his high school career (singles and doubles combined) in a 7-2 win over Middle Creek High School on Saturday, April 9th!


*Wilmington Laney's A.J. Stillwell is currently ranked number eight in the state in the boys' 16's division by the North Carolina Tennis Association.
