January 2011 Tennis Tidbits

*Andrew Tuttle of Cardinal Gibbons High School has been named the 2010 Carolina Conference Women's Tennis Coach of the Year.

*Susan McCarthy of Nash Central High School has been named the 2010 Big East Conference Women's Tennis Coach of the Year.

*Taylor McDaniel of Fred T. Foard High School has been named the 2010 Northwestern Conference Women's Tennis Coach of the Year.

*Chris Stroup has been named the new men's tennis coach at Salisbury High School.

*Linney Teague has resigned as the women's tennis coach at Hickory High School.   Teague's 2006 squad won the 3-A state championship.

*Kaylyn Key of Maiden High School has been named the 2010 Catawba Valley Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Year.

*Beth Hedgepeth of Green Hope High School has been named the 2010 Tri-9 Conference Women's Tennis Coach of the Year.

*Lindsey Linker of East Chapel Hill High School has been named the 2010 PAC-6 Conference Women's Tennis Coach of the Year.

*Lincolnton High School, coached by Dustin Weaver, will open its 2010 men's tennis season on Tuesday, March 1st at home against East Gaston.

*Kevin Hunt will be the new men's tennis coach at Greensboro Grimsley High School.

*Hillary Lutz of Shelby High School has been named the 2010 South Mountain Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Year. 

*Richard McClenny of the North Carolina School of Science and Math has been named the 2010 Carolina Conference Women's Tennis Coach of the Year.

*Lauren Frazier of Greenville J.H. Rose High School has been named the 2010 Mideastern Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Year.

*South Caldwell, coached by Will Rudicil, will open its 2010 men's tennis season, on Tuesday, March 1st at Hickory High School, coached by Rom Teague.

*Beth Bachelor of Washington High School has been named the 2010 Coastal Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Year.

*Kristen Edwards of Clayton High School and Olivia Stevens of Smithfield-Selma High School have been named the 2010 Greater Neuse River Conference Women's Tennis Players of the Year.

*Melissa Kandinata of Green Hope High School has been named the 2010 Tri-9 Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Year.

*Union Pines High School, coached by John Frye, will open its 2011 men's tennis season on Monday, February 28th at home against Overhills High School.


*Kathryn Brown of Concord High School has been named the 2010 South Piedmont Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Year.

*Brian McDougall will be the new men's tennis coach at Green Hope High School this spring.

*Jasmine Sun of East Chapel Hill High School has been named the 2010 PAC-6 Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Year.

*Greene Central High School, coached by Bobby Taylor, will open its 2011 men's tennis season at home on Tuesday, March 1st against Northern Nash, coached by Zach Marks.


*Julia Farrell of Mooresville High School has been named the 2010 I-Meck Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Year.

*Watauga High School, coached by Scott Taylor, will open its 2011 men's tennis season on Thursday, March 3rd at home against Hickory High School, coached by Rom Teague.

*William Brown of Charlotte Harding University has been named the 2010 Mega-7 Women's Tennis Coach of the Year.


*Wilmington New Hanover, coached by David Henry, will open its 2011 men's tennis season on Thursday, March 3rd at home against Greenville J.H. Rose, coached by Michael Walter.

*Cox Mill High School, coached by Robert Allensworth, will open its 2011 men's tennis season on Monday, February 28th at the brand new Hough High School.

*David Rose, whose 2009 and 2010 squads won state championships, has resigned as the women's tennis coach at Raleigh Broughton High School.

*Croatan High School, coached by Doug Sheaffer, will open its 2011 men's tennis season on Monday, February 28th at West Carteret.

*West Brunswick High School, coached by Bob Bell, will open its 2011 men's tennis season on Monday, February 28th at home against county rival South Brunswick.

*D.H. Conley has selected Alicia Wall as its 2010 Women's Tennis Most Valuable Player.

*Maiden High School, coached by Jon Huffman, will open its 2011 men's tennis season on Wednesday, March 2nd at West Caldwell.

*Cedar Ridge High School, coached by Eric Rodgman, will open its 2011 men's tennis season on Monday, February 28th at Carolina-10 league foe Durham School of the Arts.

*Lori Wang of Raleigh Charter School has been named the 2010 Carolina-10 Women's Tennis Player of the Year.

*Briana Bodner was named Hough High School's 2010 Women's Tennis Most Valuable Player.

*Bunker Hill High School, coached by Doug Watters, will host East Burke in its 2011 men's tennis season opener on Monday, February 28th.

*Greenville J.H. Rose High School, coached by Michael Walter, will open its 2011 men's tennis season on Wednesday, March 2nd at home against Wilson Fike, coached by Lee Matthews.

*Raleigh Athens Drive High School, coached by Gene Thomas, will opens its 2011 men's tennis season on Wednesday, March 2nd at Garner Magnet School, coached by Joe Walls.

*Wilson Fike High School, coached by Lee Matthews, will open its 2011 men's tennis season on Tuesday, March 1st at home against North Lenoir High School, coached by Lynn Parker.

*Kate Hanley received the Student Athletes for Sports Integrity Award for the 2010 D.H. Conley women's tennis team.

*Defending 2-A state champion Newton-Conover, coached by Brian Tate, will open its 2011 men's tennis season on Wednesday, March 2nd at home against Bandys High School.

*Central Davidson High School, coached by Justin Palmer, will open its 2011 men's tennis season on Wednesday, March 2nd at Ledford High School.

*Hannah Bullard received the 2010 Women's Tennis Coaches Award at Western Harnett High School.

*Harnett Central High School, coached by Marshall Wortham, will open its 2011 men's tennis season on Wednesday, March 2nd at county rival Western Harnett.

*Wilmington Hoggard High School, coached by Michael Bowen, will open its 2011 men's tennis season on Wednesday, March 16th at home against Woodberry Forest.

*The North Carolina High School Tennis Coaches Association will hold its winter Board of Directors meeting on Saturday, January 29th at the Pinehurst Hotel at 7:45 a.m.  All member coaches are welcome to attend.   Agenda items should be submitted by email to DClark2212@gmail.com by Friday, January 21st!

*Northwood High School, coached by Joe Kiertekles, will open its 2011 men's tennis season on Monday, February 28th at Granville Central High School.   Coach Kiertekles' Chargers advanced to the 2-A state finals in 2010.

*South Granville High School, coached by Bobby Paff, won the Carolina 10 Women's Tennis Sportsmanship Award for the 2010 season.

*Amanda Dukes won the Most Improved Award for the 2010 Lejeune High School women's tennis team.

*Central Academy of Technology and Arts, coached by Ken Neese, will open its 2011 men's tennis season on Monday, February 28th at Sun Valley.

*This year's Port City Invitational Men's Tennis Tournament, scheduled for March 4-5 in Wilmington, has a powerhouse lineup that includes two of the four 2009 state champions.   The tournament will be hosted by Wilmington New Hanover High School and directed by Wildcats' head coach David Henry.   The teams entered include last year's 3-A state champion Asheville High School, the 2-A state champion Newton-Conover, the 4-A state finalist Raleigh Broughton, the host Wilmington New Hanover squad, and Northeast Guilford, Wilmington E.A. Laney, Wilmington J.T. Hoggard, and Watauga.

*East Mecklenburg High School, coached by Thomas Nguyen, will open its 2011 men's tennis season on Tuesday, March 1st at home against West Charlotte.

*Jay M. Robinson High School, coached by Sarah Dabbs, will open its 2011 men's tennis season on Thursday, March 2nd at home against Kannapolis A.L. Brown.

*The NCHSTCA Board of Directors would like to thank coaches Jeff Kinlaw of Red Springs, Lynn Ward of Roxboro Person, Roy Hudson of Ardrey Kell, Laura Oxendine of Central Cabarrus, Chad Oxendine of First Assembly Christian School, and former Wilmington Hoggard coach Gwen Honeycutt for attending the semi-annual meeting in Pinehurst on Saturday, January 29th!

*The NCHSAA will allow men's tennis teams to play regular season matches in the spring of 2011 after their conference tournaments, but those matches must be completed before the deadline for reporting dual team playoff representatives to the NCHSAA.

*Cardinal-Gibbons seniors Cori Krause and Rachael Lynch-Daniels each won over 100 matches (singles and doubles combined) as three-year starters for the Lady Crusaders.   Krause compiled a record of 113-31 while Lynch-Daniels was 100-48.
