May 2011 Tennis Tidbits

*Emily Foulke won the Best Sportsmanship Award for the 2010 Leesville Road High School women's tennis team.

*Our 2011 4-A men's tennis coaching directory is now complete!  Ninety-six of the 98 4-A schools in our state this year have men's tennis teams.

*Laura Davidson will be the new women's tennis coach at Raleigh Broughton High School next fall.   The Lady Capitals are the defending 4-A state champions.

*The 2-A coaches had some distinguished help with the squeegeeing at the Cary Tennis Center on Friday, May 13th.   New NCHSAA commissioner Davis Whitfield was son hand to help get the courts dry for the opening round.

*Charlotte Catholic junior Kyle Johnson won his third consecutive 3-A state singles championship on Saturday, May 14th at the Burlington Tennis Center.

*Gil Bowman of Fayetteville Terry Sanford High School has been named the Mid South Conference Men's Tennis Coach of the Year.

*Ryan Wydra of Hough High School has been named the 2011 I-Meck Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Year.

*Billy Strother of Tarboro High School has been named the 2011 Eastern Plains Conference Men's Tennis Coach of the Year.

*Robbie Mudge is the first two-time singles state champion in Winston-Salem R.J. Reynolds' school history.

*William Scott of Greensboro won the 1924 high school singles state championship in North Carolina.

*The Burlington Tennis Center will play host to all four dual team state championships on Saturday, May 21st.

*For the second year in a row, the Carolina 10 Conference is sending a team to the state finals for the first time in school history.   Northwood made its first appearance in the finals last year, and this year Coach Laurence Isaac's Durham School of the Arts squad will make its first trip.

*Newton-Conover, coached by Brian Tate, will be playing in the 2-A state finals for the fifth consecutive year when it squares off against Durham School of the Arts on Saturday, May 22nd.

*Craig Smith of Hopewell High School has been named the 2011 I-Meck Men's Tennis Coach of the Year.

*Maggie Blythe won the 2010 Most Improved Award for the Leesville Road High School women's tennis team.

*Eric Simmons of Greene Central High School was named the Eastern Plains Conference Player of the Year in 2011.   Simmons won the award each of his four years in high school.

*Cleveland High School, coached by Emily Purvis, won the 2011 Eastern Carolina Conference Sportsmanship Award.

*Newton-Conover senior Hang Lak Choi was named the Most Valuable Player at the 2-A state championships at the Burlington Tennis Center on Saturday, May 21st!

*Will Hoff of Charles B. Aycock High School has been named the 2011 Eastern Carolina Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Year.

*Vijay Shankar of Marvin Ridge High School has been named the 2011 Southern Carolina Conference Men's Tennis Coach of the Year.

*Melissa Kandinata of Green Hope High School is currently ranked number four in the state in the girls' 16's division by the North Carolina Tennis Association.

*Nick James of Wilson Fike High School has been named the 2011 Big East Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Year.

*Winston-Salem R.J. Reynolds' Parker Chang was named the Most Valuable Player at the 4-A state championships on Saturday, May 21st at the Burlington Tennis Center.    Chang lost only three games in 10 sets during the state playoffs.

*Matt Daly of Cardinal Gibbons High School was named the Most Valuable Player at the 3-A state championships on Saturday, May 21st at the Burlington Tennis Center.

*East Chapel Hill High School head coach Lindsey Linker has a record of 52-6 in 13 years of dual team state playoff competition at the school.

*Chaney Barnes of Kings Mountain High School was named the Big South Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Year for the second year in a row.

*Brad Joyner of Southern Nash High School has been named the 2011 Big East Conference Men's Tennis Coach of the Year.

*Kiran Patel of Fayetteville Terry Sanford High School has been named the 2011 Mid-South Men's Tennis Conference Player of the Year.


*East Chapel Hill High School, coached by Lindsey Linker, won the PAC-6 Conference Men's Tennis Sportsmanship Award for 2011.

*Kevin Weckworth of Bishop McGuinness High School was named the Most Valuable Player at the 1-A state championships on Saturday, May 21st at the Burlington Tennis Center.

*John Walls of South Brunswick High School has been named the Waccamaw Conference Men's Tennis Coach of the Year.

*Senior Lauren Carraway was named the Greene Central Outstanding Senior Female Athlete at the annual GCHS Awards Day on Friday, May 27th.  Carraway is the first tennis player since 1990 to win the award.   She started as a freshman on the Greene Central 2007 state championship team and was named to the All-State team twice.

*Kate Medynskaya won the 2010 Most Valuable Player Award for the Leesville Road women's tennis team.

*Mark Thompson of West Carteret High School has been named the Coastal Conference Men's Tennis Coach of the Year for 2011.

*Tyler Macy of Elkin High School has been named the 2011 Mountain Valley Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Year.

*Joey Hatala of Marvin Ridge High School has been named the 2011 Southern Carolina Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Year.

*The final 2011 men's tennis polls for all four classifications are now available in the "2011 State Poll" section at the top of this page.  The NCHSTCA wishes to thank all of the voters for a great job this spring!

*Kathryn Grimsley of Fairmont High School has been named the 2011 Three Rivers Conference Men's Tennis Coach of the Year.

*Gene Thomas of Raleigh Athens Drive High School has been named the 2011 Tri-9 Conference Men's Tennis Coach of the Year.
