November 2010 Tennis Tidbits

*Men's tennis practice will officially begin on Monday, February 14, 2011.  That officially makes tennis the sport of "love."

*Greene Central and Tarboro played the only state semifinal match that went into doubles on Friday, November 5th.    The two teams battled for five hours before rain halted play at 4-4.    The match was resumed at around 10:00 p.m. when the court dried, and Tarboro won three straight games to take the eastern 2-A championship.   The Lady Vikings then had a 120 mile drive to Burlington that night before playing Salisbury at 9:00 a.m. the next morning for the state championship.

*Tarboro High School, coached by Billy Strother, advanced to the women's tennis state finals for the first time in the school's history in 2010.

*Mt. Airy's women's tennis team, coached by Scott Kniskern, advanced to the state finals for the first time in school history in 2010.

*Chris Myers has resigned as the men's tennis coach at Salisbury High School.   Myers will continue to coach the women's team and to teach at the school.

*Josh Lilley of D.H. Conley High School has been named the Coastal Conference 2010 Women's Tennis Coach of the Year.

*William Brown of Charlotte Harding University High School has been named the 2010 Mega-7 Conference Women's Tennis Coach of the Year.

*Senior Lauren Carraway of Greene Central High School has been named the Eastern Plains Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Year for the second consecutive year.   Carraway finished her four-year varsity career undefeated in singles and doubles in conference play.

*Melissa Kandinata of Green Hope High School capped off a perfect 22-0 season with the state 4-A singles title.   Kandinata finished her high school career with just one loss, in the state singles semifinals to eventual state champion Chloe Willetts last year, in two years after moving here from Florida.   Kandinata, coached by Elizabeth Hedgepeth, will be attending the University of Richmond next year.

*Methodist University in Fayetteville will be hosting a College Tennis Showcase on Sunday, November 21st.   The web site

*Joy Loeblein of Salibury has been named the 2010 Central Carolina Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Year.

*Salisbury High School had seven tennis players named to the Central Carolina All-Conference team for the first time in school history in 2010.

*Kelly Connelly of East Wake High School has been named the 2010 Greater Neuse River Women's Tennis Coach of the Year.

*The NCHSTCA has released its final 1-A, 2-A, 3-A, and 4-A women's tennis polls for the 2010 season!   We'd like to thank all of our voters for a job well done!

*Kate Medynskaya has been named the 2010 Leesville Road High School Women's Tennis Most Valuable Player.

*Randi Price of Nash Central High School has been named the 2010 Big East 3-A Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Year.

*Kate Power of First Flight High School has been named the 2010 Northeastern Coastal Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Year.

*Kenneth Watkins will be taking over the men's program at Smithfield-Selma High School this spring.

*Lauren Vann has been named the 2010 Women's Tennis Most Valuable Player at the new Corinth Holders High School in Wendell.

*Chris Myers of Salisbury has been named the 2010 Central Carolina Conference Women's Tennis Coach of the Year.

*Lyndsey Pyrtle of Jordan-Matthews High School and Francie Trent of Reidsville have been named the 2010 Mid-State Conference Women's Tennis Players of the Year. 

*Daryl Thompson of Burns High School has been named the 2010 South Mountain Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Coach of the Year.

*Graham High School, coached by Jay Cook, won the 2010 Mid-State Conference Women's Tennis Sportsmanship Award.

*Julia Farrell of Mooresville High School has been named the 2010 I-Meck Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Year.

*Melissa Tally of Union Pines High School has been named the 2010 Cape Fear Valley Confererence Women's Tennis Player of the Year.

*Wilson Fike High School has selected Mallory Short, Meredith Pruden, and Sarah Flinn as winners of its 2010 Women's Tennis Most Valuable Player award.

*Sarah Carroll of Weddington High School has been named the 2010 Southern Carolina Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Year.

*Andrew Tuttle of Cardinal Gibbons High School has been named the 2010 Carolina 3-A Conference Women's Tennis Coach of the Year.

*Melissa Olson of Lejeune High School has been named the 2010 Coastal Plains Conference Women's Tennis Coach of the Year.

*Taylor McDaniel of Fred T. Foard High School has been named the 2010 Northwestern Conference Women's Tennis Coach of the Year.

*Brevard High School sophomore Hunter Hall and Franklin High School junior Andrea Bell have been named the 2010 Appalachian Athletic Conference Players of the Year.
