Wilson Fike Relying on Young Players in 2016

08/11/2016 11:12

Wilson Fike High School, coached by Lee Matthews, was hit hard by graduation, losing five starters in last year's top six.  The good news for Fike is the arrival of four quality freshmen, three teammates from the middle school team, and one transfer from Greenfield School.   The newcomers have stepped into the numbers two through five spots in the lineup.   "All four girls are dedicated, determined players with great attitudes," said Coach Matthews.   "They have worked diligently all summer in anticipation of the upcoming season."

"Our number one, sophomore Cameron Milne, returns to lead this year's team of 'diaper dandies,' in the parlance of Dick Vitale," said Coach Matthews.  "She worked extremely hard on her game this summer, and the results are being seen in practice."

Three returnees are vying for the number six spot, and the competition has been keen.   "I don't anticipate a drop-off in performance from last year.   This year's group has more tennis players than last year, when I had more athletes playing tennis.   It's a different team composition, but equally as talented," commented Matthews.

"Taylor Love's return gives Wilson Hunt a premier player at the top of the lineup.   I expect her to make a run at the state individual championship.   Hunt also has a group of three or four seniors returning.   The two Fike-Hunt matches should decide the conference championship," said Coach Matthews.
