February 2011 Tennis Tidbits

*Lynn Ward of Roxboro Person High School and Jerry Porter of Asheville High School have been named the winners of the Ron Lee High School Tennis Coach of the Year award given by the North Carolina Tennis Association.    They will receive the award on Saturday, January 29th at the annual NCTA Tennis Weekend in Pinehurst.

*Northwest Cabarrus High School, coached by Meghan Frazier, will open its 2011 men's tennis season on Thursday, March 2nd at home against Concord.

*Cardinal Gibbons High School, the 2010 3-A state finalists, will open its 2011 men's tennis season on Monday, February 28th at Raleigh Millbrook.   The Crusaders are coached by Andrew Tuttle.

*Greensboro Page High School, coached by Jason Allen, will open its 2011 men's tennis season on Tuesday, March 1st at Western Guilford High School.


*Lake Norman High School, coached by Chris Carroll, will open its 2011 men's tennis season on Tuesday, March 1st at South Iredell.

*Northern Durham High School, coached by William Schrader, will open its 2011 men's tennis season on Tuesday, March 1st at Roxboro Person High School.

*East Gaston, coached by Terri McCumbee, will open its 2011 men's tennis season on Tuesday, March 1st at Lincolnton.

*Oxford J.F. Webb High School, coached by Will Darden, won the 2010 Carolina 10 Conference Women's Tennis Sportsmanship Award.

*Chad Oxendine will be starting his seventh season as the head men's tennis coach at First Assembly Christian School this spring.

*Will Herring will be returning for his sixth season as the head men's tennis coach at 4-A West Johnston High School.

*Charles B. Aycock High School, coached by Luke Vail, will open its 2011 men's tennis season on Tuesday, March 1st at Triton High School.

*Northeastern High School, coached by Justyn Yager, will open its 2011 men's tennis season on Monday, February 28th at Washington High School.

*Steve Spivey has been named the new men's tennis coach at Apex High School.

*Craig Mann will be returning for his third season at the helm of the Topsail High School men's tennis program.

*Joel Elliott will be starting his sixth season as the head coach of the Southwest Edgecombe High School men's tennis team this spring.

*Chapel Hill High School, coached by Nick Walker, will open its 2011 men's tennis season on Monday, February 28th at Carrboro High School.

*Red Springs High School, under the direction of first-year head coach Jeff Kinlaw, will open its 2011 men's tennis season on Monday, February 28th at Flora McDonald Academy.

*Andrew Tuttle will be starting his third season as the men's tennis head coach at Cardinal Gibbons High School this spring.

*John Frye will be returning for his 40th season as the Union Pines High School men's tennis coach this spring.


*Central Davidson High School, coached by Justin Palmer, will open its 2011 men's tennis season on Wednesday, March 2nd at Ledford High School.

*John Stull is the new men's tennis coach at Western Harnett High School.


*Hickory Ridge High School, coached by Lacey Huffling, will open its 2011 men's tennis season on Wednesday, March 2nd at Central Cabarrus High School.

*Wheatmore High School, coached by Carl Floyd, will open its 2011 men's tennis season on Tuesday, March 1st at home against East Davidson High School.

*Claude Underwood is the new men's tennis coach at Porter Ridge High School.

*Barry Nethercutt will be returning for his 23rd season as the head men's tennis coach at Rocky Mount High School this spring.

*Nick Theuner will be returning for his fifth season as the men's tennis head coach at East Carteret High School this spring.

*Graham High School, coached by Jay Cook, will open its 2011 men's tennis season on Tuesday, March 1st at home against Southern Alamance High School.

*Rebecca Lewonski was named the Most Improved Player on the 2010 D.H. Conley women's tennis team.

*Scott Taylor will be returning for his fourth season as the Watauga High School men's tennis coach.

*Will Rudicil will be starting his third season as the men's tennis head coach at South Caldwell High School this spring.

*Fayetteville Terry Sanford High School, coached by Gil Bowman, will open its 2011 men's tennis season on Tuesday, March 1st at South View High School.

*Nathan Brown will be returning for his sixth season as the head men's tennis coach at Gates County High School this spring.

*Wayne Giese will be starting his second season as the men's tennis coach at Morganton Freedom High School in the spring of 2011.


*Chris Doby and Randy Grimes will be teaming up as the coaches of the 2011 Ledford High School men's tennis team.   Grimes will be starting his 12th season while Doby is entering his sixth season.

*Randy Alexander will be returning this spring for his sixth season as the head men's tennis coach at Northwest Guilford High School.


*Luke Vail will be starting his 20th season as the head men's tennis coach at Charles B. Aycock this spring over four different tenures.

*Larry Dix is the new men's tennis coach at Ashe County High School.

*Jeff Muma is the new men's tennis coach at Southeast Halifax High School.


*Laurence Isaacs will be returning for his fifth season as the head men's tennis coach for the Bulldogs of Durham School of the Arts.

*D.H. Conley's Kelsey Martin and Courtney Gould received the Coach's Award for Outstanding Doubles Play for the 2010 D.H. Conley women's tennis team.

*Perry Snipes will be returning for his 21st season as the head men's tennis coach at Wilkes Central High School.

*East Chapel Hill High School's men's tennis coach Lindsey Linker will be returning for her 13th as the head coach of the Wildcats.

*Tim Smith will be starting his 17th season as the men's tennis head coach at Mooresville High School this spring.

Rollin Mackel will be returning for his fourth season as the men's tennis head coach at East Lincoln High School this spring.

*Eastern Wayne High School, coached by Craig Hassell, will open its 2011 men's tennis season on Monday, February 28th against Rocky Mount, coached by Barry Nethercutt.  The match will be played at historic Herman Park in Goldsboro.

*Eastern Alamance High School, coached by Shawn Watson, will open its 2011 men's tennis season on Tuesday, March 1st at Eastern Guilford.

*Charlotte Catholic High School, coached by Ken Hazen, will open its 2011 men's tennis season on Tuesday, March 8th at South Mecklenburg.
 
*Ashe County High School, coached by Larry Dix, will open its 2011 men's tennis season on Tuesday, March 1st at Forbush High School.

*Swansboro High School, coached by Jim Sheehan, will open its 2011 men's tennis season on Tuesday, March 1st at home against East Carteret High School, coached by Nick Theuner.

*Perry Tyndall has been named the new men's tennis coach at Kinston High School.

*Greenville J.H. Rose senior Lauren Frazier will be playing for Cornell University next year.

*East Forsyth High School, coached by Andrew Werner, will open its 2011 men's tennis season on the road on Monday, February 28th against the Winston-Salem R.J. Reynolds junior varsity.

*West Craven High School, coached by Keith Cannon, will open its 2011 men's tennis season on Tuesday, March 1st at home against D.H. Conley.

*Former player Daniel Phillips has been named the new men's tennis coach at John A. Holmes High School in Edenton.


*Scott Wofford is the new men's tennis head coach at Raleigh Millbrook High School.


*Wilmington New Hanover High School, coached by David Henry, and Cardinal Gibbons High School, coached by Andrew Tuttle, will play in the DecoTurf High School Tennis Team Championships in Louisville, Kentucky March 25-26.   This is a USTA national high school invitational tournament.

*Chris Grimes is the new men's tennis coach at White Oak High School.

*Jeff Whisnant is the new men's tennis coach at Western Guilford High School.


*Mike Edwards is the new men's tennis coach at Charlotte Olympic High School.

*Chris Eaves is the new men's tennis coach at Jordan-Matthews High School.

*Gina Deans is the new men's tennis coach at Whiteville High School.


*Jason Allen of Greensboro Page High School has agreed to serve as the new conference representative for the 4-A Metro Conference.


*Steve Rochkind is the new men's tennis coach at South Granville High School.

*Kenneth Hines is the new men's tennis head coach at Chase High School.


*Pete Copeland is the new men's tennis coach at Lexington High School

*Duane Sinquefield is the new men's tennis coach at South Central High School.
