June 2011 Tennis Tidbits

*John Dangerfield of Union Pines High School has been named the 2011 Cape Fear Valley Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Year.

*Roman Cacha of Raleigh Athens Drive High School has been named the 2011 Tri-9 Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Year.

*Rob Newman of Southern Lee High School was named the 2011 Cape Fear Valley Conference Men's Tennis Coach of the Year.

*Carl Floyd of Wheatmore High School and Erin Bass of Trinity High School were named co-winners of the 2011 PAC-6 Conference Men's Tennis Coach of the Year award.

*Brennan Austin of Trinity High School has been named the 2011 PAC-6 Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Year.


*Kyle Schlangler of Northwest Guilford High School has been named the 2011 Piedmont Triad Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Year.

*Eighty-four out of the 93 2-A schools in North Carolina fielded men's tennis teams in the spring of 2011.

*Ken Hazen of Charlotte Catholic High School has been named the 2001 Mega-7 Conference Men's Tennis Coach of the Year.

*Joonas Ilva of West Carteret High School has been named the 2011 Coastal Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Year.

*Blake Covington of Reidsville High School has been named the 2011 Mid-State Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Year.

*Wilmington Laney women's tennis coach was honored with the Homer Thompson Sportsmanship Award at the annual NCHSAA meeting.   The award is given to eight coaches across the state who "make a difference" with their sportsmanship.

*Ninety-four out of the 97 3-A schools in the state fielded men's tennis teams in the spring of 2011.


*Richard McClenny of the North Carolina School of Science and Math has been named the 2011 Carolina 10 Conference Men's Tennis Coach of the Year.


*Sam Weissler of East Chapel Hill High School is currently ranked #7 in the state in the boys' 18's division by the North Carolina Tennis Association.

*Matt Johnson of Triton High School has been named the 2011 Eastern Carolina Conference Men's Tennis Coach of the Year.

*St. Mary's High School in Raleigh is looking for a varsity and a junior varsity women's tennis coach.  Interested parties are asked to email a cover letter and resume to athletic director Seth Lieberman at slieberman@sms.edu. 


*Matt Daly of Cardinal Gibbons High School has been named the 2011 Carolina Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Year.

*Troy McGee of Topsail High School has been named the 2011 East Central Conference Men's Tennis Coach of the Year.

*Newton-Conover men's tennis head coach Brian Tate will be the featured guest on WHKY Channel 14 Sports Talk with Jason Savage (1290 AM) on Thursday, June 2nd at 7:30 p.m.   Coach Tate will be talking about his team's 2011 team and doubles state titles.

*Senior Casey Devane was named the 2010 Kings Mountain High School Women's Tennis Most Valuable Player.

*Kyle Johnson of Charlotte Catholic High School has been named the 2011 Mega-7 Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Year.

*Jay Cook of Graham High School has been named the 2011 Mid-State Conference Men's Tennis Coach of the Year.

*Dennis Lerchl of Roanoke Rapids won the 1998 2-A singles championship.

*Wayne Giese of Morganton Freedom High School has been named the 2011 South Mountain Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Coach of the Year.

*Ray Webb Parker of Shelby High School has been named the 2011 South Mountain Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Year.

*Perry Snipes of Wilkes Central High School has been named the 2011 Mountain Valley Conference Men's Tennis Coach of the Year.

*Andrew Tuttle of Cardinal Gibbons High School has been named the 2011 Carolina Conference Men's Tennis Coach of the Year.

*Ed Flynn of Charlotte Myers Park High School has been named the 2011 Southwestern Conference Men's Tennis Coach of the Year.

*Thomas Low of Charlotte Myers Park High School has been named the 2011 Southwestern Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Year.

*Russell Turner of the North Carolina School of Math and Science has been named the 2011 Carolina 10 Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Year.

*Tom Stainback has been selected as the 2011 Men's Tennis Player of the Year at Ayden-Grifton High School.

*Women's tennis teams will be allowed to begin practice on Saturday, July 30th this year.

*Jonathan DeLacruz won the Most Valuable Player Award for the 2011 Phillip O. Berry Academy of Technology men's tennis team.

*Only four schools have been in the men's tennis team dual team playoffs every year since they started in 1991.   Those four schools are Raleigh Broughton, Watauga, Chapel Hill, and Charlotte Catholic.

*Jonah Richardson won the Most Improved Award for the 2011 Northern Nash men's tennis team.

*Junior Elizabeth Baker won the Mountaineer Award for the 2010 Kings Mountain women's tennis team.

*Brandon McDonald of Fairmont High School has been named the 2011 Three Rivers Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Year.

*Jay Thompson of North Lincoln High School has been named the 2011 Southern Piedmont Men's Tennis Coach of the Year.

*Senior Victoria Ragan, a member of the women's tennis team, is the 2011 valedictorian at Garner Magnet High School.

*Jordan Bailey of Topsail High School has been named the 2011 East Central Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Year.

*Clint Steele won the Most Improved Award for the 2011 South Central High School men's tennis team.

*Randy Alexander of Northwest Guilford High School has been named the 2011 Piedmont Triad Conference Men's Tennis Coach of the Year.

*Kevin Her won the Bunker Hill High School Most Valuable Player in Men's Tennis Award for the second time in 2011.

*Peter McDonald of East Chapel Hill High School has been named the 2011 PAC-6 Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Year.

*Matthew Ledford of Lincolnton High School has been named the 2011 Southern Piedmont Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Year.

*Lindsey Linker of East Chapel Hill High School has been named the 2011 PAC-6 Conference Men's Tennis Coach of the Year.

*East Chapel Hill High School's Peter McDonald will be continuing his tennis career at the United States Naval Academy next year.

*Jason Allen of Greensboro Page High School has been named the 2011 Metro Conference Men's Tennis Coach of the Year.

*Robert Wimbish won the Spirit Award for the 2011 Central Academy of Technology and Arts men's tennis team.

*Nick Walker, the men's and women's tennis coach at Chapel Hill High School since 1991, will be retiring after 34 years of teaching this month.

*Junior Brooks Barwick won the Most Valuable Player Award for the 2011 Clinton High School men's tennis team.

*Alex Kearney won the Most Valuable Player Award for the 2011 Central Academy of Technology and Arts men's tennis team.

*Caleb Butler won the Coach's Award for the 2011 Rocky Mount Senior High School men's tennis team.

*Eric Greene of Western Alamance High School is currently ranked number one in the state in the boys' 16's division by the North Carolina Tennis Association.

*Jerick Garrett, a member of the men's tennis team, won the Male Sportsmanship Award at Gates County High School for the 2010-2011 school year.

*Lizzie Hanes and Courtney Bowers of Ashe County High School were true Scholar-Athletes this year, earning All-State honors in tennis and finishing numbers one and two respectively in the senior class at the school.

*Awanda Rithiphong won the Most Improved Award for the 2010 Kings Mountain High School women's tennis team.

*The North Carolina High School Tennis Coaches Association will hold its annual summer meeting on Thursday, June 16th at 9:30 a.m. at the NCHSAA office in Chapel Hill.

*Evan Moody won the Most Improved Award for the 2010 Chatham Central women's tennis team.

*Robbie Mudge finished his four-year career at Winston-Salem R.J. Reynolds with a 105-1 record in singles.   Mudge will be playing for North Carolina State University next year.

*Trent Beeninga won the Most Valuable Player Award for the 2011 Rockingham County men's tennis team.

*Clay Stewart won the Most Improved Player award for the 2011 Gates County High School men's tennis team.

*Matt Coats won the Rookie of the Year award for the 2011 Charlotte Providence High School men's tennis team.

*Mike Barnette won the Coach's Award for the 2011 Eastern Wayne High School men's tennis team.

*Concord High School seniors Bryson Goolsby and Thomas Lynch each went undefeated in conference play in singles and as a doubles team this season.    Goolsby and Lynch each won the Spider Award for the 2011 Concord High School men's tennis team.

*Lauren Badey won the Sportsmanship Award for the 2010 Garner Magnet High School women's tennis team.

*Charlotte Catholic head coach Ken Hazen is the only men's tennis coach in the state who has carried a team to the dual team state playoffs every year since those playoffs began in the spring of 1991.

*Jonathan Thames won the Coach's Award for the 2011 Richmond County High School men's tennis team.

*Greene Central High School junior varsity men's tennis coach Carol Taylor won the 2011 Greene County Middle School Pride in Greene Award.  Coach Taylor works at the middle school as an instructional technologist.  

*Austin Walker won the Hustle Award for the 2011 Charles B. Aycock men's tennis team.

*Chaz Fitzpatrick of Eastern Wayne High School won the Most Valuable Player award for the 2011 Eastern Wayne High School men's tennis team.

*Turner Votipka won the Most Valuable Player Award for the 2011 Nash Central men's tennis team.

*Chandler Butler won the Coach's Award for the 2011 South Central High School men's tennis team.

*Josh Walker of Cuthbertson High School has been named the Rocky River Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Year.

*Logan Keiper, Joel McMath, Nathan Woolard, and David O'Campo from the Jordan-Matthews' men's tennis team were Scholar-Athletes for the spring of 2011.

*David Bolick, owner of Team Connection, the sponsor of the NCHSTCA All-Region and All-State tennis teams, won the 1994 3-A men's tennis state singles championship at Burlington Walter Williams High School.

*East Chapel Hill senior Sam Weissler will be continuing his tennis career at Johns Hopkins University next year.

*Guadalupe Perez won the Most Improved Award for the 2010 Jordan-Matthews women's tennis team. 

*Denver Rakes won the Most Valuable Player Award for the 2011 Starmount men's tennis team.

*Bruno Segovia, a member of the men's tennis team, was the Student Body President at Pender County High School this year.

*Desmond Gatling won the Coach's Award for the 2011 Hertford County men's tennis team.

*Boe Juares won the Most Improved Player award for the 2011 West Johnston High School men's tennis team.

*Will Eddins won the Best Singles Player award for the 2011 Granville Central men's tennis team.

*East Duplin head coach Mark Lane starred for Graham High School in tennis in the late 1970s.

 *Matt Childers, a member of the men's tennis team, is the valedictorian for the Class of 2011 at South Stokes High School.

*Mason Holt was named the Most Valuable Player for the 2011 Rocky Mount Senior High School men's tennis team.

*Jeremy Funderburk has been named the Most Valuable Player for the 2011 West Mecklenburg High School men's tennis team.

*Cody Hamm won the Most Valuable Player award for the 2011 Alleghany High School men's tennis team.

*Lindsey Groce won the Most Improved Player award for the 2010 Starmount High School women's tennis team.

*Justin Morgan won the Coach's Award for the 2011 Central Cabarrus High School men's tennis team.

*David Thompson won the Most Valuable Player award for the 2011 Ardrey Kell men's tennis team.

*Scott Alan Cottrill won the Most Improved Player award for the 2011 Charlotte Providence men's tennis team.

*Senior Josh Recore won the Most Valuable Player Award for the 2011 Greene Central High School junior varsity men's tennis team.


*Alix Theodossiou of Asheville High School is currently ranked number eight in the state in the girls' 16's division by the North Carolina Tennis Association.

*Tim Wilkison, known as "Dr. Dirt" for his diving on the grass courts at Wimbledon, served as the men's tennis coach at Charlotte Latin High School this spring.

*Savannah Joyce won the Coach's Award for the 2010 Chatham Central High School women's tennis team.

*Robbie Mudge of Winston-Salem R.J. Reynolds High School has been named the Central Piedmont High School Men's Tennis Player of the Year.

*Nicholas Cottrill won the Team Work award for the 2011 Charlotte Providence High School men's tennis team.

*RaShawn Sears won the Coach's Award for the 2011 Gates County High School men's tennis team.

*Elon University tennis coach Michael Leonard will be sharing his ideas with high school coaches at the annual NCCA tennis clinic at UNC-Greensboro on Wednesday, July 20th.   A complete agenda for the day will be published on this site shortly!

*Jensen Willingham won the Outstanding Senior Player award for the 2011 Cedar Ridge High School men's tennis team.

*Craig Smith has resigned as the men's tennis coach at Hopewell High School after six seasons at the school.  Smith will become the new assistant principal at Gastonia Ashbrook High School.

*Hickory High School is the only school in the state to qualify for the dual team state playoffs in women's tennis each of the 22 years they have been held since 1990.

*Fayetteville Terry Sanford's Gil Bowman has guided his team to the dual team state playoffs 21 times in the 22 year history of the playoffs, a state record for women's tennis.

*Will Hoff won the Outstanding Singles Player award for the 2011 Charles B. Aycock High School men's tennis team.

*Joseph Bannerman won the Most Valuable Player award for the 2011 Pender County High School men's tennis team.

*Tanner Cook, a member of the men's tennis team, was the Valedictorian for the class of 2011 at Graham High School.

*Michael Kearney won the Most Improved Award for the 2011 Charles B. Aycock High School men's tennis team.

*Todd Davis will be the new women's tennis coach at St. Stephens High School.

*Chris Nance won the Most Improved Player award for the 2011 Pender County High School men's tennis team.

*East Chapel Hill senior Kassim Alani plans to walk on with the men's tennis team at Davidson College this fall.

*Lindsey Pyrtle won the Most Valuable Player award for the 2010 Jordan-Matthews women's tennis team.

*Barbara Keller of Hickory Claremont Central High School won the 1970 women's tennis singles individual state championship.

*Nathan Paloalto won the Coach's Award for the 2011 Starmount High School men's tennis team.
